For The Black Phone, I had the opportunity to create illustration concepts during the early stages of production. It was a rewarding project because it gave me the chance to sketch ideas by hand before moving into the digital process, something that doesn't happen very often in my work.
the challenge
Concept sketches are meant to explore possibilities rather than define final solutions. The challenge was to quickly communicate ideas, experiment with different directions, and create drawings that could help shape the visual conversation.
In production design, much of the work goes straight to the computer, so having the opportunity to draw and develop ideas on paper was a refreshing change. It reminded me how valuable sketching can be as a way to think through problems and discover new ideas.
conclusion
This project reinforced something I never want to lose as a designer: the habit of drawing. Whether a sketch leads to a finished design or simply helps uncover a better idea, putting pencil to paper remains one of my favorite parts of the creative process.
