project overview

For The Boroughs, I worked as a designer and assistant art director, with responsibility for graphics as well as landscape design for several sets. The most significant was the cul-de-sac where the characters lived. It was a different kind of design problem for me, moving from things like typography and graphics into the physical organization of a landscape.

the challenge

The landscape had to feel like a believable neighborhood while also working within the practical needs of the set. There were a lot of details to organize, from planting areas and pathways to existing structures and specific locations that needed to work for filming. I found that my graphic design background was surprisingly useful. I naturally approached the plans by organizing, categorizing, and creating a clear visual system for all the information.

The final landscape helped turn the cul-de-sac into a cohesive environment rather than simply a collection of individual houses. Working through the plans also gave me a new appreciation for how much graphic design thinking can translate into physical space. Hierarchy, rhythm, scale, balance, and organization all still matter, even when the canvas is a piece of land.

conclusion

This project pushed me outside the usual boundaries of graphic design and into something I hadn't expected to enjoy as much as I did. It reminded me that the disciplines I work in aren't really as separate as they might appear. Whether I'm arranging type on a page or planning a landscape, I'm still trying to organize visual information and create a place that makes sense.

I believe creativity and design are more than problem solving. It is a way of paying attention. It helps us notice what is often overlooked, imagine what doesn't yet exist, and discover meaning in places we might otherwise pass by.
